February 2012

YOGA JAM BENEFIT with Trish Washburn & Dennis Hawk

Friday February 24th from 6-8pm

Come do some yoga and create community by taking what is on our mat and sending it out into the world!  Our Yoga Jam will benefit the Lutinsky Family.  Becky is a yoga student, wife, mother of 2, animal lover, marathoner, and a local business owner.  The entire family is always willing to help and are completely heart-cerentered in all they do.  Our benefit will help defer costs of Becky's breast cancer treatment (her surgery is late February). We are a community who cares!  Whether you plan on participating, making a donation, or passing this on to someone else, we are SO appreciative!!

Come enjoy a yoga practice lead by Trish Washburn and the sounds of Dennis Hawk Live at our Yoga Jam.

Take your practice to a new level and feel the healing power of music as we explore a practice centered around the ART OF GIVING & RECEIVING!  Sometimes it is so much easier to give than to receive.  Let's inspire ourselves to realize that we can do life alone.  We are created for COMMUNITY and that means that we are to mat bearers as well as be on the mat to let others be our mat bearers.  Let's sweat, release, and enjoy live music together in community all while helping others.

About Dennis:
Dennis is a Contemporary Native American musician and yoga instructor. He is best known as a Native American flute player and flute maker. He is also an accomplished guitarist and a music composer.  Dennis? Native American flute influences are R. Carlos Nakai, Louis Webster and Bill Miller. His background on guitar is folk/rock, influenced by Stephen Stills, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young.  Dennis also spent many years as a psychotherapist and recently has become a yoga instructor. He has found music to be a healer of the soul bringing peace to mind and body.

Workshop: Yoga for Triathletes with Trish Washburn

March 10, 2012  2:00 - 4:00 PM

Many triathletes have told me they would love to try yoga but can't squeeze it into their intense training regimens. The swimming, biking and running leaves little time in a triathlete's schedule, but those who find time for yoga agree the benefits can be considerable. Triathletes are unique because they compete at peak levels in three physically demanding sports. Over time, this extreme training can cause imbalances in the body, which can result in injury if not addressed. Yoga can help by going beyond simple stretching to work the muscles and joints through all ranges of motion. By working the body through all planes of motion, yoga creates balance, stability, core strength and flexibility.

Common injuries from running and cycling include those involving the illiotibial band (ITB), knees, hamstrings, hip flexors, and shoulders. Running tightens and shortens the muscles and joints without a corresponding lengthening and flexibility. Cycling can result in overdeveloped quadriceps and tight hamstrings, which can pull the hips out of alignment. Swimming is less stressful on the joints and muscles, but can result in a tight back and shoulders. A well-rounded yoga program can remedy these issues.

In addition, the mind-body connection in yoga is a vital element in building focus and concentration necessary for succeeding on race day. Proper breathing is one of the foundations of yoga. Athletes who learn to stay focused and centered through uncomfortable poses by concentrating on deep inhales and full exhales can utilize yogic breathing techniques to achieve peak stamina and endurance during a race or challenging workout.

Come learn how to free your body and your mind for better recovery and race results!  We will focus on stabilization of the pelvis, strengthening your core and anatomical asana (pose) focus for swimming, biking and running.

What to bring: Mat, water, notebook

Investment: $25
